Park in the Fall

Allergy Awareness Park Sign

At Free From Families, we believe that small changes can make a big difference for children living with allergies. One of our first community projects was the introduction of an allergy awareness sign in Bruntwood Park, Stockport.

Parents of children with severe allergies know how difficult it can be to visit public spaces such as parks. Food is often eaten on or near play equipment, and residues from ice cream, crisps, or other snacks can put children with allergies at serious risk. While most people don’t think twice about a child running around with a treat in hand, for families managing allergies it can mean the difference between safety and a trip to A&E.

Inspired by similar initiatives in the United States, we worked with Councillor Iain Roberts at Stockport Council to create one of the first allergy awareness park signs in the UK. The sign was designed with input from local children living with allergies and their families, and it offers simple guidance on how everyone can help keep play areas safer.

The project showed just how powerful collaboration can be. A simple sign has opened conversations, raised awareness, and inspired other families to approach their own councils about similar initiatives.

We are proud that our work in Stockport has already sparked interest nationally.

If you would like to advocate for an allergy awareness sign in your local park, you can download:

  • A template letter to send to your councillor

Together, we can make public spaces safer and more inclusive for every child.
